Why Does Endometriosis Occur?

Endometriosis happens when the tissue lining the inside of your uterus appears on the outside of your uterus. This phenomenon can have several causes but is most often the result of retrograde menstruation or hormonal issues. Retrograde menstruation happens when menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity. These endometrial cells stick to the pelvic walls and surfaces of pelvic organs. Once there, they grow, thicken, and bleed over the course of each menstrual cycle.

Is Endometriosis a Serious Concern?

The major issue arising from this concern is a lowered fertility rate. Studies show that one-third of women with this condition have a difficult time conceiving. Moreover, women who have this problem may be at a greater risk of developing cervical cancer in their lifetime. For these and other reasons, it is essential to diagnose and treat this condition early. If you are experiencing complications, we welcome you to get in touch with our Rockwall gynecology center today.
